Abstract

Essential oil of the shoots of Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad (Family Chenopodiaceae) was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed using GC-MS technique. Thirty one compounds were identified including terpenes (mono, di and sesquiterpenes), heavily oxygenated compounds and lightly oxygenated compounds. Terpenes were found to be the major constituents (58.54 %). α-thujaplicin (22.91 %), phytone (8.66 %), Dictamnol (7.98 %), butylated hydroxytoluene (7.49 %), phytol (6.57 %) and camphenolone (3.84 %) were the major components in the oil. The volatile oil showed significant antimicrobial activity in vitro against Esherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus and Aspergillus niger and moderate antifungal activity against Candida albicans.
