Abstract

The starting point for this study is a rhetorical analysis of compositio (the syntax of style) in the tercets of the sonnet so as to suggest a reading of them and a punctuation in accordance with their underlying coherent argument. The syntax develops an argument whose resulting subordinates imply a close causal dependence between the end of line 11 (y aún sabrá querello) and the beginning of the last tercet (que, pues mi voluntad puede matarme). This helps to explain the rational architecture of the tercet, reminiscent of the cancionero' s poetry, and should also be present in the punctuation, in my opinion.
