Abstract

Static Var Compensator (SVC) and thyristor controlled phase angle regulator (TCPAR), two members of FACTS family, have been known to offer benefits to power systems. This paper investigates their effects on composite system reliability in aspects of adequacy. Based on the structures and principles of operation of these two devices, the reliability models are built via the state space approach. The capability characteristics of the SVC and TCPAR are described. The SVC and TCPAR are dispatched through an optimal power flow, which considers the control capabilities of the two FACTS members. The models and techniques are illustrated by a number of case studies. The results show that the utilization of SVC or TCPAR has a positive impact on the system reliability and the degree of the improvement depends on many factors.
