Abstract

The experiment was carried out at the College of Agricultural and Veterinarian Sciences of Sao Paulo State University, campus of Jaboticabal, Brazil to evaluate fermentation characteristics, nutritive value of the no wet, wilted and no wet plus citrus pulp (5.0% of fresh forage) Tifton 85 silage. The samples were taken 80 days after ensiling, and at 15, and 30 days after air exposition. We evaluated the silage dry matter (DM) content, fermentation characteristics (pH, ammonia N, organic acids), crude protein (CP), cell wall contents (CWC), and “in vitro” dry matter digestibility. Data was analyzed in accordance with a randomized block design in sub plot scheme, considering the silage on the plots, and time of aerobic exposure on the sub plot, with four replications. It was observed low contents of organic acids and ammonia N, and high pH values, due to the high silage DM content. The neutral detergent insoluble nitrogen and acid detergent insoluble nitrogen fractions of the high dry matter silage increased during the air exposition periods. The extension of the wilting period, citrus pulp addition, and air exposition periods did not affect the CP values, CWC and IVDMD of the high dry matter silage. The Tifton 85 harvesting time, fermentation characteristics of the silage, associated with the CWC resulted in low IVDMD of the silage
