Abstract

The osmotic response of adult freshwater prawn Macrobrachium tenellum fom the Pacific coast of Mexico was compared with t of M. acanthurus from the Gulf of Mexico. They received four experimental treatments with gradual and abrupt changes of salinity. 80th species showed a similar osmotic behaviour at O to 20 ppt, reaching their isosmotic points a 632 a 640 mOsm/kg respectively; byod this point both a hiporegulators. However, while M acanthurus regulae precisely at 632 mOs/mk, the blood osmolarity of M.. tenellum will increase slowly beyond the isosmotic point. The maximum salinities tolerated by the specimens were 21 ppt for M. tenellum and 25 ppt for M. acanthurus.
