Abstract

The method of first and second differences often permits the separation of zigzag curves (on probability paper) into two or more Gaussian components. Where the procedure can be employed, it yields means and percentages. By this method the hypsometric curve of the earth can be made to produce four components, having means at −5.2 km, −4.85 km, 0.3 km, and 0.35 km. Not all curves permit analysis of this type. For those that do, the procedure is partly subjective.
