Abstract

It is demonstrated that the determination of an absolute electrode potential involves the measurement of an electron work function and a contact potential difference. No theory is needed to integrate the experiments. The problem is entirely tractable in thermodynamic terms. Some existing misunderstandings are pointed out and analyzed.
