Abstract

To investigate the development of compression splice resistances, compression splices under normal conditions, splices with bond only and splices with bearing only were tested. The bond and bearing strengths of the normal splices were found to be less than those of splices with bond only and splices with bearing only, respectively, because in the normal splices the circumferential tensile stresses induced by bearing and bond overlapped at the ends of the splice length. However, the strengths of the normal splices are always higher than the strengths of the bond only or bearing only splices because the normal splices exhibit less slip compared to the bond only or bearing only splices at the same level of bar stress. Consequently, the splice strength in compression cannot be improved by removing either the bond or the bearing. In addition, the bond strength in the bond only splices is nearly the same as the bond strength in tension splices.
