Abstract

Three fundamental theoretical frameworks that help explain changes in the spatial organization of urban systems are examined. By using regression analysis and the analysis of variance, an effort is made to determine the contribution that each of these theories makes in explaining the evolution of actual urban systems. The theories are tested by using data for the urban systems of the Ukraine, Poland and East Germany. The author concludes that the evolution of urban systems might be controlled by modifying the particular factors to which particular theories assign the greatest significance.
