Abstract

On Dec. 16, 1998, the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) published the Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (IESWTR)1 as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act. The purpose of the IESWTR is to improve the control of microbial pathogens, including Cryptosporidium, in drinking water and to ensure microbiological quality as water systems comply with the Stage 1 Disinfectants/Disinfection By‐products (D/DBP) Rule.2 USEPA estimates that endemic illness from Cryptosporidium will decrease by 110,000 to 463,000 cases annually. The IESWTR will reduce the likelihood of an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis by providing a larger margin of safety.
