Abstract

Hip fracture surgery in the elderly can be a very challenging field with the potential complications being devastating. These complications often result in reoperation and revision surgery associated with significant morbidity and mortality. This article presents common surgical complications associated with intracapsular, extra-capsular, and subtrochanteric fractures. We discuss the risk factors of complications, aetiology, tips to avoid them, and also the management options based on current evidence. We believe that this can be a valuable resource for a trainee orthopaedic surgeon as well as refreshing the current knowledge base for practising orthopaedic surgeons.
