Abstract

Atrial fibrillation is the commonest cause of cardioembolic stroke, which accounts for approximately 20% of ischaemic stroke. Cardioembolic stroke has a higher risk of morbidity and mortality, resulting in greater disability, longer hospital stays, costlier rehabilitation, and complications that greatly affect the quality of life. Appropriate treatment with anticoagulants, in conjunction with the management of hypertension, diabetes and cholesterol, will reduce the risk of stroke. Complications of stroke include dysphagia, post-stroke seizures, dry mouth, depression and post-stroke pain. The treatment strategies involve medication, however this leads to polypharmacy which has can increases the risk of adverse drug reactions. Also, some patients are averse to taking multiple medications.
