Abstract

Stellate ganglion block (SGB) is one of the most common various sympathetic blocks used for the diagnosis and treatment of pain in the head and upper extremity. As a diagnostic tool, it is intended to separate sympathetically mediated pain states. Stellate ganglion is intimately related to the transverse processes and the prevertebral fascia anteriorly, the subclavian artery superiorly, the posterior aspect of the pleura posteriorly and the initial portion of the vertebral artery anteriorly. There are multiple approaches for SGB or lesioning, including blind, fluoroscopic and ultrasonographic approach. The complications of SGB may be categorized as needle trauma, intravascular injection, anomalous spread of the injectate and effects of the drugs used. Retropharyngeal hematoma after SGB occurred even in patients who did not have abnormal hemostasis and who had a negative aspiration test for blood.
