Abstract

Complications of otitis media are much less frequent today than in the pre-antibiotic era, yet they remain a significant cause of pediatric morbidity from infectious disease. Complications of otitis media can be acute or chronic and further subdivided into intracranial and extracranial disease. Careful clinical evaluation and appropriate imaging studies are essential for the diagnosis of acute complications of otitis media. Oftentimes a high index of suspicion is required to recognize early complications. Management of complications typically involves culture of offending pathogens, appropriate intravenous antibiotic therapy, and surgical intervention.
