Abstract

In 100 cerebral angiographies in 100 children, a 5% complication rate was observed; in a similar series in 100 adults, complications were seen in 7%. Three deaths were not directly attributable to angiography. Four of the complications in adults consisted of formation of a neck hematoma. Bilateral carotid angiography is no more dangerous than study of a single vessel. The risk of complications does not seem to increase with an increase in the volume of contrast material. Selective cerebral angiography, if carefully performed by the femoral artery route, appears to be as safe in children as in adults.
