Abstract

The solutions to reduce the prevalence of medication-related harm in aged care are just as multifaceted as those that can be used in other industries where processes are complicated and complex. Designing safe systems is a key element of these efforts, with factors such as automation, electronic medication management systems, and the emergence of artificial intelligence all supplementing other aspects of safe health delivery such as appropriate environmental design and safe staffing levels. Nevertheless, as any experienced health practitioner will readily confirm, there is both art and science involved in the processes of safely delivering care for patients, particularly people of advanced age.
