Abstract

Hypertension and cardiac hypertrophy are risk factors for sudden cardiac death. 1 Dunn F.G. Pringle S.D. Sudden cardiac death, ventricular arrhythmias and hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy. J Hypertens. 1993; 11: 1003-1110 Crossref PubMed Scopus (50) Google Scholar Patients with prior myocardial infarction are prone to subsequent myocardial ischemia and associated life-threatening arrhythmias. A lot is known about the mechanisms of arrhythmias in ischemia and infarction, 2 Janse M.J. Wit A.L. Electrophysiological mechanisms of ventricular arrhythmias resulting from myocardial ischemia and infarction. Physiol Rev. 1989; 69: 1049-1169 Crossref PubMed Scopus (844) Google Scholar but fewer data are available on the effects of ischemia in hypertrophied myocardium. The explanation of the relative paucity of data lies in the difficulty in the choice of the models and the interpretation of the emanating data.
