Abstract

The main goal of this chapter is to investigate Uzbek women’s perception of constraints to solo travelling. As a conservative Muslim country, the solo travelling of women in Uzbekistan is not legally restricted by the law. However, their desire to travel alone is constrained by a variety of factors which are mainly rooted in custom requirements and social norms. Patriarchal gender norms impose these obstacles on Uzbek females, with women supposed to be submissive to a system of institutionalized male power. Drawing on 16 in-depth interviews conducted with young Uzbek women, the findings of this study showed that women encounter constrains in three main themes: (i) individually-perceived constraints; (ii) family-related constraints; and (iii) gendered-imposed constraints.
