Abstract

Homoleptic tris(triazenido) derivatives of ruthenium, osmium, rhodium and iridium, M(ArNNNAr)3 (Ar = p-C6H4X; X = H, Me or Cl), have been prepared by treatment of the chlorides or chloro complexes—RuCl3(aq.), (NH4)2OsCl6(aq.), RhCl3(aq.) and (NH4)2IrCl6(aq.), respectively—with excess 1,3-diaryltriazene and triethylamine in boiling ethanol (M = Ru, Rh) or aqueous ethanol (M = Os, Ir). The sparingly soluble, air-stable, deep green (M = Ru, Os) or red-orange (M = Rh, Ir) complexes have been characterized by vibrational and NMR spectroscopy, and by magnetic measurements.
