Abstract

The complex modulus and the viscoelastic as well as the viscoplastic creep susceptibility are analysed to investigate if these properties can be used as true material properties to predict the stress strain behaviour of asphalt mixtures in road pavements. The complex modulus and the viscoelastic creep susceptibility were determined in the four point bending test. The creep was measured in the triaxial creep test. The complex modulus and the viscoelastic creep susceptibility can be considered true material properties. The viscoplastic creep susceptibility was found to depend on the specimen size, and can therefore not be considered a true material property. It was found that the viscoplastic creep susceptibility can be greater or smaller than the viscoelastic creep susceptibility, depending on the type of mixture (grain structure), the specimen size, the state of stress, and the shape of the wave-form of the applied stress. The viscoelastic creep susceptibility in the low frequency domain can be used as an estimator of the viscoplastic creep susceptibility, and the resistance to permanent deformation.
