Abstract

In the spin-chain compound Ca 3 CoIrO 6 muon spin precession and relaxation spectra at temperatures above 100 K exhibit non-exponential behavior characteristic of a system of dynamic, disordered magnetic moments. On cooling below about 100 K the onset of spontaneous magnetic order is revealed via the presence of coherent oscillations in muon spin relaxation spectra taken in zero external field. This magnetic transition is attributed to the intra-chain ferromagnetic order. There is one more change in the μ SR signal associated with the spin-glass like freezing transition at T f = 30 K previously established by bulk susceptibility and neutron scattering data.
