Abstract

The reaction between some organic thio-acids and germanic acid in aqueous solution has been investigated. Conductivity studies show that germanic acid reacts with thioglycollic acid, 1-mercaptopropionic acid and thiomalic acid to form 1:2 complexes in solutions of acid pH value. Germanic acid does not complex with 2-mercaptopropionic acid. Potentiometric titration of the complex acids show that germanothioglycollic and germano-1-mercaptopropionic acid behave as dibasic acids with pK 1 values of 2·05 and 1·92 respectively in 0·1 M KCl and a ligand concentration of 0·02 M. Germanothiomalic acid behaves as a tribasic acid with pK 1 = 1·91 under the same conditions. The complex acids appear to be decomposed gradually as titration with alkali proceeds beyond pH 6·0.
