Abstract

Ultrasound velocity dispersion was investigated in aqueous solutions of Ce(NO 3 ) 3 and Ce 2 (SO 4 ) 4 . The conclusion was made that ultrasound velocity dispersion has been caused by the association of Ce 3+ with NO 3 -1 or SO 4 -2 and formation of inner sphere complexes [CeNO 3 +2 ]aq or [CeSO 4 +1 ]aq. The rate constants formation for Ce(111) complexes has been evaluated. The data of relaxation parameters of solutions Ce(NO 3 ) 3 and Ce 2 (SO 4 ) 3 are compared. The magnitude of ultrasound dispersion for Ce(NO 3 ) 3 is much smaller than that of Ce 3 (SO 4 ) 3 solutions. In order to produce an appreciable concentration of inner complexes in the Ce(NO 3 ) 3 solutions for a similar dispersion and relaxation a tenfold higher concentrations of the nitrates must be used
