Abstract

The time-resolved dynamics of non-polar solvation have been measured in n-butylbenzene, a glass-forming liquid, through a combination of transient hole burning and time-resolved fluorescence. The solvent relaxation is highly non-exponential within the temperature range examined, 155–250 K. The average solvent relaxation times are equal to the average shear relaxation times, suggesting that the relaxation is primarily mechanical in nature. In support of this conjecture, a simple viscoelastic-continuum model of the solvent is developed that reproduces the basic features of the data.
