Abstract

Authentic activity of the ethylene-forming enzyme has been fully recovered in vitro for the first time. The enzyme was extracted in a soluble form from fruits of melon ( Cucumis melo). Both the extraction and assay required conditions that had been shown previously to preserve in vitro the activity of flavanone 3-hydroxylase, an enzyme which it had been proposed resembles in its amino acid sequence a component of the ethylene-forming enzyme.
