Abstract

The meson decays $B\to D\tau\nu$ and $B\to D^* \tau \nu$ are sensitive probes of the $b\to c\tau\nu$ transition. In this work we present a complete framework to obtain the maximum information on the physics of $B\to D^{(*)}\tau\nu$ with polarized $\tau$ leptons and unpolarized $D^{(*)}$ mesons. Focusing on the hadronic decays $\tau\to \pi\nu$ and $\tau\to\rho\nu$, we show how to extract seven $\tau$ asymmetries from a fully differential analysis of the final-state kinematics. At Belle II with $50~\text{ab}^{-1}$ of data, these asymmetries could potentially be measured with percent level statistical uncertainty. This would open a new window into possible new physics contributions in $b\to c\tau\nu$ and would allow us to decipher its Lorentz and gauge structure.

Summary

INTRODUCTION

Leptonic and semileptonic hadron decays are important probes of the fundamental quark-lepton interactions within and beyond the Standard Model (SM). In B → DÃτν the longitudinal τ polarization PLðτÞ [14,15] and the fraction of longitudinally polarized Dà mesons FLðDÃÞ [16,17] have been measured This shows the potential of the current flavor experiments, Belle II and LHCb, to extract the properties of the b → cτν transition by measuring the τ kinematics in the decay. E T; e1 1⁄4 eT × eL ≡ e⊥; ð2:6Þ where p M is the direction of the M momentum, results in dΓλBτ jMλBτ j2dΦ3ðpB; pM; pτ; pνÞ; dP These four differential distributions capture all the information in the matrix elements MÆB in the B → DðÃÞτν decay (with unpolarized DÃ). Together with the total differential rate dΓB=dq, the angular coefficient functions BÆ0;1;2ðq2Þ ∈ R and C1;2ðq2Þ ∈ C describe the full kinematic information in B → Mτν decays with unpolarized mesons. The angles θτ and ζ are related to φ and θd via cos θd 1⁄4 cos θτ cos φ þ sin θτ sin φ cos ζ: ð3:4Þ
