Abstract

Heat capacity measurements have been made on CO and N 2 on graphite between 3 and 20 K at sub-monolayer surface coverage. While no anomaly was observed in this temperature range for N 2/graphite, a large heat capacity with a peak at 5.4 K was found for CO/graphite which is associated with the cooperative end-for-end ordering of the CO molecules on the surface of graphite basal plane.
