Abstract

The sporangiophores of Phycomyces piloboloid mutants, genotype pil, gradually cease longitudinal elongation and radially expand in the growth zone beneath the sporangium shortly after they have reached the final developmental stage. The allele pil was recessive. Twenty-three mutants were isolated by mutagenesis from a wild type (NRRL 1555) and two color mutants (C2 and C9). They were tested for genetic complementation using heterokaryons obtained by grafting stage I sporangiophores. The mutants fall into four complementation groups, pilA to pilD. Two mutants failed to complement with pilA and pilC mutants and with pilA, pilB, and pilC mutants.
