Abstract

Between 1980 and 1997, Canada and its main competitors were able to increase their agri-food exports to Asia. The constant market share (CMS) analysis indicated that those increases were primarily attributed to the rapid growth of Asian agri-food imports during the period. In particular, Canada was found to be competitive in the Asian market, ranked the second only after China. Canada's traditional competitors, such as the United States, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, were found to be non-competitive. Strong competition to Canadian agri-food exports in Asia came from countries like China, Indonesia, and Thailand.
