Abstract

This is a brief analysis of the competitiveness issues of Kazakhstan. Policymakers and leadership of many emerging and transitional countries understand the importance of competitiveness. However, the story ends there and countries implement partial reforms and urgently for the immediate visible results, creating a periodic mismatch in expectations. In this brief paper the author elaborates about the great amount of work that competitiveness requires and explains for the need of holistic approach in this endeavor. This analysis could be useful for policymakers from the former soviet republics, since there are many commonalities in competitiveness issues in the region.
