Abstract

This chapter summarises and evaluates the development scale and design outcomes of the Competitive Design Policy (CDP) that has involved nearly 50 projects since the turn of the century. The policy has been applied to the largest and highest, and often the most expensive private property projects across central Sydney. The development parameters, design attributes and locational distribution insure that the design competitions have remade central Sydney as a global Central Business District (CBD). Along the way, the year 2012 marked a dividing line in terms of property market shift, policy sophistication and procedural maturation. The completed and approved projects demonstrate a clear articulation between design excellence and global competitiveness: the recent and high-profile projects for tenants of the global advanced producer services (APS) tend to present better design quality and outcome.
