Abstract

Silica fume is an effective pozzolan in controlling alkali-aggregate (silica) reactionwhen used in appropriate amounts as a cement replacement. The experiments described in this Paper showed that silica fume reacts in a similar way to alkali-expansive opal with CaOH)2 and/or NaOH. Pastes of silica fume and Ca(OH)2, silica fume and NaOH, and silica fume and Ca(OH)2 plus NaOH showed the same expansive properties as corresponding pastes made with opal and these three alkalis. The role of silica fume in controlling alkali-aggregate (silica) reaction is attributed to a competitive reaction between alkali-silica fume and alkali-aggregate (silica) reactions.
