Abstract

Many addition compounds of the α-amino acid betaine with different adducts display interesting structural phase transitions. Ferroelectric, antiferroelectric, ferroelastic and modulated phases were found in these materials. Recent experiments clearly show a specially rich variety of different commensurate and incommensurate phases in betaine calcium chloride dihydrate. Some aspects of the theoretical models used to describe the observed phase transitions sequence will be presented.
