Abstract

The present situation of competitive intelligence in Cuba is analyzed, taking the corresponding situation in Latin America as antecedent. The possibilities of successful application of CI in Cuba are studied along with the enterprise and socioeconomic environment (and their limitations). The main positive factors influencing enterprises are analyzed: the economic opening; the strengthening of state-owned companies through enterprise improvement activities; national systems for support of technology management, intellectual property, and information infrastructure; as well as the Strategy for the Computerization of Cuban Society and the National Policy of Information. These factors are considered to create the appropriate conditions for the successful application of CI as a managerial tool for decision-making, and to contribute to a culture that supports the use of information in Cuban enterprises. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
