Abstract

The trend of competency-based education (CBE) in primary school is reshaping the conventional framework of teacher education. This chapter introduces the background of CBE, reviews CBE studies from 2010 to 2020, and discusses how the literature may shed light on English as a foreign language (EFL) teacher education. The chapter includes four parts: (1) Introduction: current education trends and challenges for EFL teacher education; (2) Method: how this study conducts a review of the literature; (3) Results: (a) underpinnings of CBE, (b) principles of CBE, and (c) how recent CBE studies can inform EFL teacher education; and (4) Conclusion: implications from the literature review and directions for future CBE practices and research related to EFL teacher education.
