Abstract

In increasingly virtual societies individuals must be able to “distinguish and interpret” - critically, photographic visual content; but, how to develop these skills, especially among young students? This article is an incentive for the analysis of the current situation and subsequent development of educational proposals that favor the needs found. The research was conducted at an educational institution in the city of Cali - Colombia, where structured interviews were applied, for a week, to 400 young students (between 14 and 19 years of age), 38 teachers and four photographers. The analysis established that students are not strangers to the mental processes implicit in the reading of images; what is needed is the critical method, visual literacy; it is a must to create another type of thinking from the educational settings, educating the eyes to strengthen the reflections; it is essential to promote the analysis of the still image included in the photographic discourse .
