Abstract

A 12-pulse converter is often used in medium voltage applications. The major drawbacks of these converters are the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the input current, and low power factor. These drawbacks can be treated by compensation techniques such as passive or Active Power Filter (APF). In this paper, a three-winding transformer (star/tapped-star/delta) with an APF connected to the secondary taps with specific power locus is used to improve the THD and input power factor. However, the size of the APF should be tolerated. To lower the APF burden and size a proposed compensation technique using Active Power Filter (APF) with power locus VAr offset using Fixed Capacitor bank (FC) is used. Simulation results for medium voltage are introduced and verified experimentally using low voltage scaled prototype system.
