Abstract

For many people, the weekly 9–5 working life goes beyond beingmerely a way to make a living. The various roles and responsibilities associated with employment often fulfil a fundamental social and psychological need and not just a financial demand on our time. Illnesses, such as cancer, can alter our ability to perform these functions and, without adequate legal protection, employees whose disease is incurable may find they are discriminated against at a time when the sense of meaning and self-esteem are already compromised. This month’s web words looks first at resources to further the discussion raised in the commentary article on p554 of this issue: Compassion in the workplace?
