Abstract

Compassion and empathy are key attributes to living a healthy and happy life. Surprisingly, there is little written about how these qualities can be taught to children and young people, as well as how teachers can model these traits in their teaching practice. This book fills this void by exploring compassion and empathy in educational contexts. The book shares a number of models of compassion and empathy that can be implemented in schooling contexts. Some chapters also examine how compassion and empathy are presented in texts such as children’s picture books, films and games. Personal insights are also shared about successful practices that are necessary in today’s world due to bullying and individualism. Finally, some authors also present practical approaches to improve people’s awareness and use of compassionate and empathetic approaches to others. Overall, the book supports the work of all educators in early childhood settings, schools, universities and communities.
