Abstract

Aircraft noise measurements were made adjacent to airport monitoring system microphone stations at five California airports and compared to corresponding noise levels indicated by the airport system. In addition, aircraft noise levels were measured simultaneously at various heights above ground level to determine the effect of microphone height on noise data reported by airport monitoring systems. Takeoff and approach noise levels for identified DC-9 aircraft were then compared at two airports and differences in results were evaluated. In general, the airport monitoring systems reported high levels than indicated by precision sound level meters, even though the microphone height effect should cause monitoring system output to be less than sound level meter data. Also, significant differences were found between DC-9 noise levels at the two different airports.
