Abstract

Objective To compare the effect of phacoemulsification and small incision modern extracapsular cataract extraction for the treatment of senile cataract. Methods A total of 93 patients (107 eyes) with senile cataract were collected and were divided into two groups randomly: group A with 45 cases (52 eyes) as control group and group B with 48 cases (55eyes) as observation group. Patients in control group accepted phacoemulsification and patients in observation group accepted small incision modern extracapsular cataract extraction. Results The differences in the percentages of patients whose visual acuity were equal to or better than 0.5 at one week, one month and three months after the surgery were not statistically significant between the two groups. But the incidence of complication in the observation group was significantly lower than that in control group( P<0.05). Conclusion For the treatment of senile cataract, the small incision modern extracapsular cataract extraction has good effect and lower incidence of complication. Key words: Cataract, senile; Phacoemulisification; Extracapsular cataract extraction, modern, small incision
