Abstract

A comparison of the results of determination of long-term trends in foF2 and hmF2 in publications of various authors is performed. Causes of the discrepancies in the absolute values of negative trends obtained by different researchers are analyzed. Three main causes are formulated: a wrong choice of the length of the data series used for deriving trends and the absence of the allowance for the diurnal and seasonal variations in trends. The role of all three factors leading to underestimation of the amplitude of the negative trends in foF2 and hmF2 is considered with specific examples.
