Abstract

Abstract A diode accelerator has been used to transport a beam of He+ ions through both circular and slit extraction apertures. The beam widths were measured for a range of accelerator aspect ratios for both geometries. In particular the perveance match condition was found to deviate from linear optics predictions for both cases. This deviation is attributed to a third-order aberration at the plasma boundary and values of the coefficient of aberration C are calculated for both cases. It is shown that for both circular and slit geometries C ∝ (a/d)−1.9, where (a/d) is the accelerator aspect ratio, implying a geometry-driven effect. The effect of the aberration is used to qualitatively explain the observed deviation in the perveance match condition.
