Abstract
This paper focuses on the initial phase of group therapy and compares adult with latency groups to highlight the development and phenomena in latency groups. The group dynamics and the behavior of particular types of patients and their resistances are detailed. Dependency needs and transference wishes are explored along with the therapist's role and countertransference. Indicators of the end of the initial phase provide a guide to the therapist for adult and latency groups.
