Abstract

The Sunn pest is a serious pest of wheat and the other cereals. In this study, the effects of proteinaceous extracts of chickpea, bean and rice against the Sunn pest α-glucosidase was investigated. Results showed that chickpea seed extract has an inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase activity of the Sunn pest gut but bean and rice seed extracts did not affect the enzyme activity. The effects of various concentrations of chickpea seed extract on α-glucosidase activity of gut were dose dependant. There were significant differences between the control and different treatments. Also, results showed that the effect of chickpea seed extracts on the α-glucosidase of the Sunn pest gut was pH dependant. Thus, our results showed that chickpea seed extract, but not bean and rice seed extract, has biological activity against the Sunn pest α-glucosidase and it could contribute towards the development of new insect pest control strategies.
