Abstract

We compare the joint measurements of soot and submicron aerosol mass concentrations in the near-ground air layer both at locations with a high degree of anthropogenic loading (Beijing, Moscow, Alma-Ata, and Ryazan) and in small resort cities (Kislovodsk, Pyatigorsk, Yessentuki, and Gelendzhik). Measurements under background conditions are compared; they were made in the Sinlun mountain observatory, located 150 km north east of Beijing, and at the Zvenigorod scientific station of Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences (IAP RAS, 60 km west of Moscow). Also presented are the results of en route measurements in the region of Mineralnye Vody in the Caucuses. All of the measurements were performed using a unified technique (by optical methods), which made it possible to generalize the obtained results and to identify common regularities and differences. The quantity characterizing the relative content of soot mass in the submicron aerosol mass makes it possible to identify the role of local and regional sources and to trace the heterogeneous processes of aerosol transformation.
