Abstract

Objective To investigate and analyze the sources of work stress of nurses in and to provide guiding for reducing the work stress.Methods A total of 115 psychiatric nurses in grade Ⅱ and grade Ⅲ psychiatric hospitals were picked using convenience sampling method and surveyed basic information with Chinese Nurse Job Stressors Questionnaire.Results Sources of work stress of nurses in grade Ⅲ psychiatric hospital were scored (20.37 ±3.77) in nursing profession and work,( 17.72 ± 29.29) in workload and time allocation,(7.84 ±2.38) in working environment and resources,(28.79 ±7.21) in patients care,and ( 18.13 ±5.96) in management and interpersonal relationships.The total score of sources of work stress was (92.86 ±32.19).All the scores were significantly higher than those of grade Ⅱ hospital [(16.90 ±3.74),(11.99 ±3.40),(7.26 ±2.26),(26.10 ±4.03),(16.40±4.22),(78.65 ± 14.61);t =-7.000,-2.084,-1.907,-3.501,-2.542,-4.310,respectively;P<0.05).Low salaries and other welfare(3.10 ±0.86),concerns for working accidents(2.83 ±0.81),and high frequency of work shifts (2.76 ± 1.05)were ranked to be first three sources of work stress of nurses in grade Ⅱ psychiatric hospital.On the other hand,redundant paperwork(6.17 ± 2.03 ),low salaries and other welfare(3.64 ±0.61),and high frequency of work shifts (3.37 ±0.84)were the first three sources of work stress of nurses in grade Ⅲ psychiatric hospital.Nursing profession and work,workload and time allocation,and patients care were among the top 10 sources of work stress of nurses in both grade Ⅱ and grade Ⅲ psychiatric hospitals.Conclusions Nurses in grade Ⅲ and grade Ⅱ psychiatric hospital have similar sources of work stress.However,nurses in grade Ⅲ psychiatric hospital showed higher stress than those in grade Ⅱ hospital. Managers should strengthen professional training,reasonably arrange working time for nursing according to the situations of hospitals,and provide psychological assistance to clinical nursing staff.
