Abstract

The concern for environment and the need for improvement in sustainable technologies for future are increasing day by day. One such emerging technology is the electric vehicle. Electric vehicle has zero emission at vehicle level as a result of using electric motor for propulsion. A sustainable transport can be developed by reducing energy consumption using six-phase induction motor drive in electric vehicle, instead of the existing three-phase induction motor and BLDC motor. The paper presents the comparison of six-phase induction motor over three-phase induction motor for reducing the energy consumption due to reduced current per phase of six-phase induction motor than the three-phase induction motor using simulation in MATLAB/Simulink environment. High phase number drives possess several advantages over conventional three-phase drives reducing current without increasing the voltage per phase, high reliability, increased torque and reduced losses and hence energy consumption. The six-phase induction motor offers more torque than three-phase induction motor of same power. The model simulated concluded that six-phase induction motor offers torque improvement along with reduced losses leading to extension of range in existing electric vehicles.
