Abstract

The results of a reinterpretation of 64 seismic-refraction profiles recorded in the western United States are summarized and compared with the crustal structure of central Europe. A basic travel-time diagram can be derived, showing features similar to those found for European profiles. Contour maps for several parameters: the critical distance of the phase reflected from the crust/mantle boundary, the average Pn-velocity, the depth to the strongest velocity gradient, e.g., as well as a fence diagram for the area of investigation are presented and compared with respective presentations for central Europe.
