Abstract

Abstract Seines equipped with either hard rubber roller or gathered-netting (mesh) mud lines were compared for efficient harvest of large (1-5-1b) channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) from 1-acre earthen ponds. In ponds with soft muddy bottoms, the roller mud line seine caught a cumulative average of 77, 89, and 93% of fish by weight in three successive hauls, as compared to the mesh mud line seine, which caught 57, 75, and 83%. Mean harvest totals were significantly higher for hauls 1 and 1 plus 2 with the roller mud line seine (P < 0.0032 and P < 0.009, respectively) than hauls 1 and 1 plus 2 with the mesh mud line seine. Mean harvest totals for hauls 1–3 did not differ significantly between mud line types (P > 0.1386).
